Start your bushfood garden with Tasmanian pepperberry! You’ll have your own never-ending source of pepperberries and an attractive garden companion.  Pepperberry has lush green foliage and crimson red stems.  It typically grows to 3m tall and bushy, although in the right conditions it may reach over 6m.  It responds well to pruning and can be a useful screening plant.

In Tasmania pepperberry is found growing in soils formed on dolerite, granite and basalt – all igneous geology.  It may grow well in other soil types as well, with a little more care.  It likes moist soils with good drainage and high organic matter.  In a bush environment it often grows out of old rotting logs – and therefore can grow in lines as if planted there.

Pepperberry tends to be an understorey plant in a natural environment except where it grows at high altitude.  Therefore it likes a little shade – choose a shady position around your house.  Avoid north facing unless well shaded.  East facing is better than west facing since the hottest part of the day in Tasmania is around 3pm – when pepperberry would prefer to be in shade.   The lower in altitude you are the more pepperberry wants shade.

Our pepperberry plants are grown from cuttings from high yielding plants across Tasmania.  They are sold in one litre pots and are ready to plant out.  Ideally plant in autumn, winter or spring. If planting into late spring or summer you will need to water more frequently. You may need to protect your plants from browsing wallabies.  They will chew them to the ground just for sport!  Young pepperberry plants are overwhelmed by vigorous grass growth – you might consider a weed mat or other weed management solution.

HOBART LOCAL PICK UP ONLY.  Let us know what altitude your plants are growing at and we will try to provide you with something sourced from a similar altitude.  We will make arrangements with you for pick up following purchase – you will need to provide contact details for this purpose.

Oh and remember you might need a male plant also – to ensure good pollination and fruit set.
