Manuka does grow in New Zealand but is also found in dense south-east Australia and particularly in Tasmania where it is occurs in uncultivated, wild and dense stands. It comes from the World Heritage forest reserves of Western Tasmania. It possesses a distinctive floral flavour that is darker and richer than many other honeys.
Manuka honey is used in various health applications. Notably it is applied directly to skin wounds, burns and infections. It has also proved effective against sore throats and inflammation.
