Nothing could be more Tasmanian than hand carved pepper mills made from speciality Tasmanian timber and filled with our very own native pepperberry.
These mills make the perfect gift when you are looking for something authentic, Tasmanian and rare.
Beautiful and sleek, they make a great statement and talking point an your dinner table.
Tasmanian timber is renowned to be a thing of beauty, strength & rarity.
In the cool temperate conditions of the Tasmania’s wilderness these trees grow very slowly.
You can choose between the following timber, each with their own unique grain, colour and texture.
Blackheart Sassafras A incredibly unique and diverse coloured timber. Pale grey/golden timber streaked with rich brown, black, and even green running through the wood. Blackheart is highly prized for decorative work as no two pieces are ever the same.
Huon Pine: Pale coloured from light straw to rich golden honey. It contains natural oils that give it an unmistakable warm rainforest aroma.
Blackwood: Boasting a variety of colours ranging from golden-brown to deep reddish brown and occasionally showing black streaks, the timber radiates a subtle beauty that makes it irresistible to woodworkers. Additional character results from the grain of the wood, which can be straight or wavy with a natural lustre.
Myrtle: The rich red, almost pink, colour is vibrant, combining subtle variations in tone with the texture and sheen of wavy and fiddleback features to produce a surface alive with character and individuality.
The waisted body is sleek, sexy and easy to grip
The easy to grip sphere head has an attractive pattern carved in, each pattern unique to the grinder.
The words “TASMANIAN PEPPER” and the map of Tassie has been pyrographed into the side.
The mill is finished in a subtle gloss for ease of cleaning and durability.
Dimensions: Each are slightly different but roughly 195mm x 60mm
Tasmanian made using Tasmanian timber by a Tasmanian bloke!
The design of these pepper grinders is simple and strikingly beautiful.
For this we are truly grateful to Mervyn Eaton who designed and turned these out of his workshop just south of Hobart.
Hand made is even better when you get to shake that hand! This is a local affair.
Merv has spent 30 years pursuing a passion for Tasmanian timbers, wood craft and design.
Every grinder, hand carved by Merv, is beautifully unique.
Of course we want these grinders dedicated to our Tasmanian pepperberry (a.k.a Tasmanian Pepper) instead of common black pepper. So we got Merv to write it on the side of the grinder – just as a little reminder!
We have included a 50g pouch of our Tasmanian pepperberry with each grinder. Read more about our pepperberry here.
