Kunzea harvest
We harvest this amazing plant, Kunzea ambigua, from Tasmania’s north east coast every winter
Kunzea is wild harvested
Our kunzea harvest (Kunzea ambigua) comes from Tasmania’s beautiful East Coast. It grows in the coastal hinterland over the East Coast’s iconic red granite geology that stretches through Tasmania’s most northerly point, the Furneaux islands. Kunzea grows abundantly throughout this area.
Sustainability and scalability
We return to the same 15 ha bush property every year to harvest Kunzea. Land clearing on this property decades ago has favoured Kunzea, which grows almost as a monoculture. We harvest with a hedge trimmer. We’ve been doing this for five years, so we are able to see our impact. Kunzea bushes respond well to pruning – they grow back quickly and become more bushy and compact.
Kunzea is abundant across most of the north east coat and into the Furneaux islands. Yields are high and the plants appear to be invigorated from the haircut. Therefore we think that harvest is sustainable and scaleable.
